Into Gloucestershire…

Best bench so far

After an early breakfast (we skipped the cooked English) we were walking by 8:30am. After a couple of wrong turns we hit three villages in succession; Littleton Drew, Luckington and Sherston. Littleton Drew had the best bench, carved with the name of the village. The church was simple and stark. Luckington had a small shop in a shipping container behind the pub, which was mercifully air conditioned and where we bought soft drinks and energy food (cakes).

We walked across a lot of hayfields where the farmers had cut the crop and were leaving it to dry in the abundant sun. Not easy to walk through; by the time we got to the stiles, our boots were wrapped in hay like snowshoes.

We skewed the route in the afternoon so as to walk through the National Arboretum in Westonbirt. Lots of shaded paths and tall tall trees. We took our time and enjoyed the exhibits and the Tree Top Walkway. We saw later that normal entry required pre-purchased tickets, but we just walked in on the footpath as it was a public right of way.

The route was fairly flat and the Macmillan Way and Monarch Way paths were very well marked. It’s just the heat we battled today.

  1. I like the telephone box library and the tree top walkway. Well done on breaking 300 miles. Take care with the summer heat this week
