After a great stay at Wensleydale House in Hawes, Jan and Wayne wished us good luck and at 8:30am we headed into Hawes to buy lunch at the bakers. After an easy walk across fields to Hardraw we started the ascent of Great Shunner Fell. The name should give it away; although not steep it is a long uphill climb and you pass through a number of ‘false summits’ before reaching the top. We got there just after noon and the reward is twofold; 360 degree views of the surrounding hills and dales and a unique four sided windbreak of drystone walls which forms a cross and has wooden benches. It really worked and we were sheltered from the wind whilst we ate our lunch.  The long descent down into Thwaite took about two hours and when we got there we stopped for a tea and coffee at Kearton’s. We then took a series of paths through numerous fields to the west of Kisdon to Keld and a surprisingly tough uphill climb to our B&B, Frith Lodge, which is in an isolated location just off the Way about a mile north of Keld.

Serendipity. On June 22nd, our very first day of LEJOG, when walking past Sennen Cove, we met a very nice couple, Megan and Anthony and chatted for a while about our respective walk plans. Mention was made of possibly meeting up if our plans coincided. Low and behold, they happened to be staying at Frith Lodge, so we spent a very enjoyable evening in their company and also met their friends Brenda and Alistair. It’s so amazing when coincidences happen in this way.

  1. Wow – it looks spectacular! And there’s such a fun feeling meeting up with friends (new and old) along the way.

  2. Upper Swaledale is one of the nicest parts of the Dales. Did the Thwaite,Muker,Keld walk a few years ago with John & Co. Fantastic view from Frith Lodge in your photo…

  3. Just did this route back to Frith lodge today. You clearly are fitter than us! We found it quite a slog. Another great meal at Frith Lodge, but you two were missed x
