From Devon into Somerset…

200 miles, 500,000 steps!

Well, that was hard. Took the 7:31 train from Taunton to Tiverton Parkway. The journey there took 10 minutes but it took 10 hours to walk back. The first 6 miles were along the Grand Western canal and the pace was fast and easy, despite the light rain. At that point the canal was no longer navigable and soon petered out to nothing but a grass track, reappearing occasionally in a few places later on. The 200 mile mark was reached at the end of the waterway. Our path transitioned to the West Deane Way in the valley of the river Tone. The stile count increased. We took our lunch sitting on a stile near Wellington. Although the ground was fairly level the miles took their toll and so reaching the White Horse in Bradford-on-Tone was wonderful; hydration commenced immediately. We chatted about LEJOG with the staff and the only other customer (thanks Groucho for giving to our Macmillan Cancer Support Just Giving campaign!). The final four miles into Taunton was on the riverbank then on roads into town and to be perfectly honest, we were knackered.

  1. Wow -quite the accomplishments congratulations! Thanks for posting all the great pictures – the churches are so interesting and there is quite the range of structures.

    1. Yes Wendy the churches are often the oldest building in the village and have a lot of interesting features. The fonts are often very, very old and typically the monuments and memorial tablets on the walls describe local wealthy benefactors and/or war heroes. There is always a memorial to WW1 and WW2 dead, the former usually has so many more names on it. And they are nice dry places to sit and rest.
