600 miles! Moors! Forests!

Today was unremarkable. Nothing too scenic, nothing too wet. The day started with some excitement because the butcher in the village had a Morris Minor van and we had a good chat with him whilst we selected our pies for lunch. We trudged up the hill from Bellingham onto the moor at Highstead Hill, skirted Abbey Rigg and walked across Troughend Common to Whitley Pike where we stopped for our snack at the cairn. After passing to the west of Padon Hill we descended a long slope to the start of the forest where we had lunch sitting on the remains of a stone wall. Then after a tough climb up through the ferns and bracken we were in the forest proper. Except we never actually got to walk amongst the trees; the conifers had been felled so it was mostly a wasteland with some wide forest firebreaks, walking on gravel roads. Hard on the feet!

We saw a group of five walkers behind us all day but they never caught up which was unusual because we tend to be the slowest ones on the trail.

So overall, today was just one more step on our journey, one day closer to Scotland. At least it didn’t rain.
