The day started with a tough steep climb up from Byrness to Saughy Crag. The final 50ft involved scrambling amongst knee high boulders and ferns. ‘Scramble’ is the term used by one of the guidebooks; for us old folks it was more like crawling on our hands and knees. But we made it and the view from the top was spectacular; we could see yesterday’s path through the forest. Now we were truly in the Cheviots; nothing but grass, huge rounded hills and acres of purple heather. The sun shone all day. The landscape was devoid of any buildings apart from a mountain rescue hut where we sat on the porch outside and had our lunch. But there were a lot of walkers today, probably because it was a bank holiday weekend. Once we got to Windy Gyle, we descended down to the barn at Trows where our B&B host met us and drove us back to Byrness for a much needed pint, shower, dinner and bed.
