Lichfield

After four days of walking we arrived in the cathedral city of Lichfield. We stayed at the George hotel for one night then moved to a very nice Airbnb near the cathedral. Today we met up with our friends Ron, Faith and their daughter Raffi and toured the cathedral and the Erasmus Darwin herb garden. Erasmus Darwin was Charles’ grandfather and an impressive polymath in his own right. He can be credited with the invention of the axle differential and was of decidedly republican views when such views could be deadly. He also formulated some early views on what later came to be known as evolution. Lunch was at the Ask Italian restaurant. The cathedral is rare in having just three spires and in the chapter house is a hand written gospel dating from the year 730. The medieval wall paintings were impressive. Lichfield is a pleasant small city to walk around and deserves another visit!
