Well we made it to Bath, a milestone for sure.

The day was hot and sunny and the paths mostly followed the Wellow Brook river north east. After a few miles we came across an ice cream stand outside a farm, so our mid morning break was decided upon. We made a rare decision and chose to go up a hill rather than around it in order to visit the Stoney Littleton long barrow, a stone burial chamber dating back to 3800 BC. We descended into Wellow and had lunch in the cool of the church.

In moving towards Bath we took a byway along the contours and encountered motorbikes and galloping horses; for the most part all traffic is permitted on a byway, but in this case ‘vehicles’ were limited to no more than a metre wide.

Part of the remaining route took us along a disused railway. Good for speed and more importantly, we avoided the hills of Bath by going underneath them. One tunnel was 1672 meters long and took 25 minutes to get through. The Combe Down tunnel is the longest walkable tunnel in the country. The lighting was very dim and the temperature was cold so this made for an interesting contrast! The second tunnel (the Devonshire) was 409 meters. We got to our guest house at 4:00pm. 265 miles walked.

Keen eyed observers will have noticed a drop off in the number of stile pictures. After yesterday’s record count of 38, the Walk LEJOG media committee voted not to take pictures of every stile from now on, but rest assured they are still being counted.

In the evening we met up with our longtime friends Jayne and Steve for a pub meal. Thanks so much for coming all the way to Bath to see us!

  1. Wow that castle looks so cool! Glad you’re still counting stiles, 38 was probably a lot of pictures to upload/download haha!

  2. Were you able to enter the barrow? I read that the entrance is only about four feet tall which seems like a tight squeeze, yet it’s taller inside and perhaps one might walk stooped over. Wouldn’t it be something to crawl around in a hole where people did the same 3000 some years ago. What a great time you must be having!

Except for the sore feet, of course.

  3. Great to meet you tonight. Hope you fit in shower. Good luck with next steps to Castle Combe. Edinburgh not much further.

  4. Combe Down Tunnel must have been a strange place to walk but great for avoiding the (very) hilly bits of Bath. Looks like good weather all the way to Shotteswell now…
    See you on Saturday.
